Project Development

This past week I have been looking at different sources of cinema. This last week I have been watching "Outer Banks" and "The Last of Us." I did research into the source material for each show. Outer Banks is original content, meaning that the concept of the show comes from the screen writers of the show. The idea does not need to be adapted from other content such as books, video games, previous movie iterations, historical events, etc. "The Last of Us is adapted from a Video Game. My topic and question revolve around how visual information in literature gets adapted into a cinematic visualization. Upon my research into the video game and its visual comparison to "The Last of Us" TV show, I have realized that the adaptation to the show is very accurate to the video game. Not only through visuals, but plot and story as well. "The Last of Us" only has six episodes so far but has already received great reviews from critics about the acting, ci...

Research Development

The research that I have done this past week has been minimal. I have been watching the movie Blade Runner 2049. The movie won an academy award for best cinematography and best visual effects. I have not finished the movie yet; however, I am excited to finish it. So far, the production design is very high quality and I find it intriguing. I am at a crossroads between my topics. I am torn between the topic of translating descriptive literature into visualizations and the topic of examining the role of interior design in movie production. I think that both topics have potential to be good projects; the problem is if I will enjoy learning about either one. To properly know I will have to do more research into the topics. I have discovered an article that talks about the production design of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The article says that, to create the amazing world of Middle Earth, every aspect of filmmaking and unconventional means needed to be developed to create the illusion...

Topic Selection

I believe that I have narrowed my final topic down to one option. I believe that I will be focusing on my topic of production design and how interior design can contributed to cinema. More specifically, I believe that my topic will be about how one can translate descriptive literature into a visualization. I think that my typology of project will be a study into examples of how artists take descriptions of objects and scenes and how they interpret them into a visualization. From that, I will be able to develop a process about how to bring about a visualization from the original author's intent, instead of through the artist's interpretation of the scene. This will involve intense literary analysis of descriptive passages. For example, if one were to interpret the descriptive phrase, "the oak tree was big" they would first have to approach the passage in its context. When was the passage written? Has the author used different phrasing for similar terms? What kind of o...

Weekly Update

Hello all, the progress that I have made in my research this past week after all the snow days has been good! I have received good feedback on all of my questions posted on concept board. Now it is time to narrow my focus. I have narrowed my focus to two different areas. I will most likely develop each in tandem with each other as my research and the class continues. The human relationship with the sun and how it has affected architecture is the first area of intrigue I am currently developing. The question I posed on the concept board was "What historical examples of architecture show the relationship between human occupants and the solar orientation of the building?" To dive deeper into that question, I need to truly think about what relationship I am looking for exactly. Does the sun represent that humanity is part of something higher than themselves? Did ancient humans somehow understand that the sun is the source of all energy on earth? Or is it simply th...
