First Blog Post

Over the past week I have researched my topics though different means. The first thing I did was google how society and health professionals currently view the sun. They argue that exposure to the sun creates health problems such as skin cancer. However, there is more current research that suggests that the benefits of sun exposure more than outweigh the potential negative effects. Vitamin D synthesis and mental health benefits are the reason for the narrative change into a positive view of the sun. I, myself, am a firm believer that going outside, in the sun, has great personal health benefits. I believe this feeling facilitates humanities appreciation towards the sun and is the reason we see light in such a positive way. In my research, I have discovered that many civilizations have worshiped the three natural sources of light for centuries. The sun, moon, and stars. The Ancient Egyptians had a city named Heliopolis Which means City of the Sun. Sun worship goes back thousands of years. According to the periodical "Egypt's Eternal City," (Cited Below) the earliest known temples in Heliopolis date back 4,600 years.
For my interest in Interior Design's role in film production, I watched The Dark Knight, Dune, American Psycho, and Zoolander. These movies are critically acclaimed and interesting. My favorite movie on this list is Dune. I previously read the book and understand the overall themes, plot and setting of the universe. What is production design, if not the creation of a unique setting? The production design of Dune perfectly matches what could be the universe humanity colonized under a totalitarian emperor 8,000 years into the future. A setting that seems ancient, yet futuristic at the same time. Dune is a great example of a design that imagines future weaponry, architecture, lighting, furniture, interstellar travel, and materials that is cohesive to the plot, theme, and story. If you have any movie suggestions that have great production design that stick out to you please let me know.
For my topic about light color and brightness I completed an assignment in my advanced lighting course about using light as a sculpture. The angle and brightness of a light can affect the perceived form of a space or object. Although this project was completed using white light, the overall principle can be applied to colored light as well. Perhaps lighting can be used to paint three dimensional forms in various ways temporarily. There are many examples of dynamic lighting installations. Throughout this next week I will research them. If you guys have any examples, please comment them.

  1. I can most definitely attest to the sun being beneficial to mental health, from personal experience. I struggle mentally during months where the sun isn't out as much, and I can feel the difference in my mood if I'm stuck inside at work on a cloudy day or in my room with my curtains closed. Humans need sunlight, and they need a very close relationship with it. As for film: I would highly suggest you watch the films Ex Machina and Her. The former takes place in this beautiful, sophisticated home inset into a cave in Norway. The house frames nature and constructs its own view of it with small courtyards and framed views into intimate niches in the surrounding rockscape, emblematic of the film's theme of man rubbing up on the confines of its very nature in a sort of roundabout way. The latter takes a prospective look at Los Angeles a few decades into the future, constructing the surrounding city fabric, including transportation and information systems, at the upscaled density that 3rd year architecture looked into in our studio last semester.
