Research Development

The research that I have done this past week has been minimal. I have been watching the movie Blade Runner 2049. The movie won an academy award for best cinematography and best visual effects. I have not finished the movie yet; however, I am excited to finish it. So far, the production design is very high quality and I find it intriguing. I am at a crossroads between my topics. I am torn between the topic of translating descriptive literature into visualizations and the topic of examining the role of interior design in movie production. I think that both topics have potential to be good projects; the problem is if I will enjoy learning about either one. To properly know I will have to do more research into the topics. I have discovered an article that talks about the production design of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The article says that, to create the amazing world of Middle Earth, every aspect of filmmaking and unconventional means needed to be developed to create the illusion of making things worn, windblown, and used. The book's descriptions also play a large part in how different scenes were visualized. I need to find an article that focuses on one director's style of filmmaking and design. Denis Villeneuve is a director whose work I really enjoy watching. I will do some research into his style of filmmaking and his visual language.

  1. Tate,
I like your imaginative appeal to both the topics in question. The idea of translating descriptive literature in visualizations is very intriguing but maybe less direct in finding a question that goes along with it in where your at in your research. Examining the role of interior design in movie production is more directly related to the design world and how the design in movies impacts people's perception of the movie but also on design and the creativity behind the production. I think your right in that doing more research is going to help you clarify your intentions. I like that you are thinking about which you would enjoy more since ultimately we want these projects to be enjoyable, fun, and enlightening.

  2. I wonder if your two interests can be melded. Can you look at specifically the adaptation of interior spaces from literature to the screen? Is there a difference in how interior spaces are set up in media vs how they are in real life (ie. on stage, everything is set up to face the audience, in FRIENDS we never see the front wall of Monica's apartment, etc)? I think looking into some academic research about this would provide a lot of insight- I'm sure there has been a lot of writing about the things we don't even know to think about.

    Good luck!
