Alterations

 This past week I have made a fairly large change to my project. I believe that, to better articulate what I want to accomplish with my research, I should change my question. My last question focused on deriving an objective process to analyze how one can take descriptive literature and use it to make a visualization. Film was going to be a method of finding out that process by looking at how the filmmakers took that description and created a visualization. My new question is How is descriptive literature translated into film and television production design? I believe this new question is answerable. My previous question had many variables that could feasibly be answered. My question sought to create an objective process out of subjective material. Answering the question would have needed to involve variations of project variables. My new question allows me to look into the process of taking a written passage and translating it to film. With this new question comes new methods of investigation. I believe that a new method of investigation will be examining a passage of literature and comparing it to a corresponding film short. In this comparison I will be going word-by-word through the passage and illustrating, through various means, the connection between them.

    That's a cool method though time consuming. Why are you going word-by-word? Also, are you comparing book and movie adaptations, or just taking a piece of literature and imagining it as a movie? Are you translating words to architecture or just to movie colors or expression? Is there a certain genre of literature or a time period, and are you connecting this to architectural theory?

Research Development

 The research that I have done this past week has been minimal. I have been watching the movie Blade Runner 2049. The movie won an academy award for best cinematography and best visual effects. I have not finished the movie yet; however, I am excited to finish it. So far, the production design is very high quality and I find it intriguing. I am at a crossroads between my topics. I am torn between the topic of translating descriptive literature into visualizations and the topic of examining the role of interior design in movie production. Methods

  My methods for the exploration into my question “How do architectural descriptions of fictional buildings get adapted into visualizations for film?” involve many methods of exploration into the topic. The overall process will take place in two parts. The first process will be an examination of the actual process of translating a literary medium into a visual one. This will be through literary review of case studies of specific movies that have been adapted from previous literary iterations. Of these case studies they will be Maze Runner, Dune, and Lord of the Rings as previously explained in the project background. I will gather this information from recorded interviews with their production designers and filmmakers. I will read the books to find architectural descriptions of the buildings as seen in the movies. Project Development

This past week I have been looking at different sources of cinema. This last week I have been watching "Outer Banks" and "The Last of Us." I did research into the source material for each show. Outer Banks is original content, meaning that the concept of the show comes from the screen writers of the show. The idea does not need to be adapted from other content such as books, video games, previous movie iterations, historical events, etc. "The Last of Us is adapted from a Video Game. My topic and question revolve around how visual information in literature gets adapted into a cinematic visualization. Upon my research into the video game and its visual comparison to "The Last of Us" TV show, I have realized that the adaptation to the show is very accurate to the video game.
